The future of Jarno Trulli

It was September 11th 2011 when Team Lotus announced the extension of the contract of Jarno Trulli through the 2012 season. The speculation about the extension begun earlier within the year with his manager confirming to GoCar.gr that his client has "sealed the deal for 2012" in the summer time. Fast forward and in the last GP’s many paddock sources suggested that his future is in doubt even with the announcement from the team.

The Abu Dhabi paddock was no exception to that with the whispers coming suggesting that Jarno Trulli will have his last race with the team in Brazil. So we will have another interesting situation there on who might get the empty seat. Watch this space.

Press Conference and Kimi questions

Here is what the transcript is saying on the questions regarding Kimi

Q: Frank, again a bit like Mercedes there have been a lot of staff changes within the Williams team. What are your thoughts on the changes for next year – personnel, engines, even drivers.

FW: Well the engine choice we felt will be the right one. We have long-term memories with Renault and they have always served Formula One and ourselves extremely well. Various other personnel changes within the company. We will see how they work. I think it would be inappropriate for me to describe what is expected of any one individual.

Q: And drivers as well?

FW: Not clear exactly who will be in both cars. I am sure Pastor (Maldonado) will be in one car. Rubens (Barrichello) maybe, we haven’t really made up our minds what we want to do before we talk to Rubens.

Q: (Heikki Kulta –Turun Sanomat) Frank, 10 years ago you were interested in getting Kimi (Raikkonen) to your team. Now, 10 years later are you still interested to get him now you can do so?

FW: I knew this would come up. But my view, as you might well expect, goes as follows: a lot of supposition and I cannot make any comment about supposition, sorry to be so unhelpful.

Q:Are you following his rally career?

FW: I am not a rally fan.

Q: (Joe Saward – Grand Prix Special) Just to follow up on that question. Martin and Stefano, Kimi drove for both of you, what advice would you give to Frank on this subject?

MW: Try and sign him. Kimi, we all know he is quick. I think people underestimate how intelligent he can be. I hope that he is hungry. I am sure he hasn’t lost the capability to thrill us in Formula One so I think it would be fantastic for Formula One. I wouldn’t ordinarily presume to advise Sir Frank who he should sign but I think it would be exciting if he did.

SD: Of course, I would not give any advice to Frank. He has long experience. A lot longer than me. For sure, I know Kimi very well. He is very talented, very strong, and if he wants to come back he has something that wants to show to everyone about him, about the fact that he was the last driver to win the World Championship with us and he will want to show he is still one of the strongest.

The story of Charles Pic

Todays announcement of Marussia Virgin racing was interesting because it connects the story L’Equipe published two days ago. They picked up Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, Charles Pic and Reserve Driver Robert Wickens for the Young Drivers Day.

L’Equipe wrote two days ago that Charles Pic has signed with Marussia to get the place of D’Ambrosio for the 2012 season. As the team mentioned: “For Frenchman Charles Pic this will be the first time he has driven an F1 car. He will take over the reins of the MVR-02 on Tuesday afternoon, followed by a further day of running on Wednesday. The 21 year-old finished 4th in this year’s GP2 Series Championship, securing two race wins, five podiums and three pole positions along the way”. Adrian will do half a day, Pic with do one and and half day and Wickens did FP1 and Thursday in full.

Until the announcement Pic was connected for testing opportunities for almost all the teams from midfield down to the end of the grid. Lets see if we have any news from that end shortly.

For those who are awaiting announcements this weekend

There are many people who are awaiting announcements this weekend. Either from Williams on their drivers or from Force India on the same issue. Doesn’t look this way. Nothing is scheduled from both teams, so nothing will come.

All eyes and ears will be on the todays scheduled press conference with John Booth (Virgin),Ross Brawn (Mercedes),Stefano Domenicali (Ferrari),Saul Ruiz de Marcos (HRT),Frank Williams (Williams) and Martin Withmarsh (Mclaren). Raikkonen and FOTA seems to be on the line.
